diy scarf organizer

I hope everyone had a great holiday season! Boy, did it go by fast! I have been quite busy around here. My husband and I moved into a new apartment so most of my time has been spent on unpacking.  With a new apartment comes new organization ideas! {yay for being organized!} My first organizational project is a scarf organizer. Best part … its DIYable and costs nothing! {if you have the supplies on hand.}
Here’s what you need…
{materials}
Wire hangers {I used 5 hangers}
Masking tape
Scraps of fabric

{tools}
Wire cutters
Pliers
Scissors
Glue gun
A 20oz can

Here’s what you do…
Start by straightening out the wire hangers using your pliers.

Wrap the wire hangers around the can. Hold down one end and wrap tightly. When you let go the wire will spring open more creating a larger circle than the can.

Use your wire cutters to cut out wire rings. Each hanger will make 2 rings. I scored the wire hangers with the cutters like so…

And then they just snap apart.
Use your pliers to adjust the ends.

Tape ends together.
On one ring I left the hook part of the hanger connected to use as a hanger.

After all the rings are taped arrange the rings however you want. Here are some examples…

Then tape rings together where they meet.
Take your scraps of fabric and cut into strips. I kept the edges raw. {You could also use ribbon.}
Now we wrap!
I started at the top of the hanger. Glue, wrap, glue, wrap ……

No particular order, I just wrapped until all the wire and tape was covered.

I used one solid color to wrap the entire hanger, but then I thought it needed more color so I added a few colorful scraps here and there. Use whatever you like, one fabric throughout or multiple! Use up your scraps!

Hang your scarves!

  5. Wow! I am impressed! I recently made my own scarf organizer, but with a plastic hanger and rubber bands. Certainly not as nice as yours, but a lot easier. I might try yours too... but it may be a little too involved for me. LOL. Here's the one I made:

  6. Just made these. Not sure I'll ever do them again, though. They are SO difficult to bend and cut! :( I used two different type of wire hangers but they were both really tough. I'm 22 and in pretty good shape so I can imagine other people probably have trouble with this too, unless they have other tools that aren't listed.

    Too bad though. I loved the way they turned out! I wrapped each wire in ribbon instead to make it more elegant- and it worked. Like I said, though, it was really difficult to wrap and cut. :/
